The Housing Commission developed Whalan in the mid 1960s and the street layout and housing have largely stayed as they were, so nearly every shutter in the suburb is a retrofit added decades after the house was finished. How well that retrofit was done decides everything that follows.
We cover Whalan across the 2770 postcode along with Tregear, Emerton, Dharruk, Lethbridge Park and the Mount Druitt centre. Oxley Park and St Marys sit on the same run.
The homes are modest in size with standard window openings, and there are still a lot of manual shutters here that have never been replaced with motorised units.
A strap or a winder is one of the cheapest repairs on a roller shutter and one of the most worthwhile, because a manual shutter with a good strap will keep going for years. Parts are still available for most of the common systems fitted around here. If your strap has gone or the winder no longer takes it up, do not force the shutter by hand from the bottom rail, because that is how slats get bent and a strap job turns into a curtain job. Leave it where it sits and we will deal with both the strap and the winder in the one visit.
