Wanniassa was among the first parts of Tuggeranong to be built, going up from the mid-1970s across the slopes below Wanniassa Hills. That makes its shutters some of the oldest in the valley, and age is the main thing working against them. A shutter fitted in the 1980s to a house built in the 1970s has been through a great many Canberra winters by now.
We cover all of Wanniassa in the 2903 postcode, out to the Fadden, Gowrie and Monash boundaries and across toward Kambah. The rest of the Tuggeranong Valley is on the same run.
The housing is mostly single-storey brick veneer with aluminium window frames, and the shutters are retrofits. Very little here failed early. Most of it has simply worn out.
Plenty of Wanniassa households originally fitted shutters for security rather than comfort, and a shutter only does that job while its locks and guides are sound. A curtain that lifts at the bottom rail, or a guide rail with movement in it, can be pushed out of the way far more easily than most people expect. If yours no longer locks down firmly, that is worth attending to on its own terms, separately from whether it still opens and closes smoothly.
