Torrens went up in the second wave of Woden Valley building, through the late 1960s and into the 1970s, and much of the original single-storey brick housing is still in place. The shutters we look at here were nearly all added later, sometimes in the 1980s, sometimes much more recently, and their age matters more to the diagnosis than the age of the house does.
We cover the whole of Torrens in the 2607 postcode, across to the Mawson, Pearce and Farrer boundaries. Chifley, Phillip and the rest of Woden Valley are on the same route.
Because shutters here were fitted over such a long stretch of years, one street can hold three or four generations of hardware. What fails depends heavily on when the unit went on.
A common worry with an older shutter is that nothing will be available for it. In practice the mechanical parts, springs, bearings, guide inserts, seals and end locks, are largely standard across brands and sizes, so an obsolete badge on the headbox is rarely the obstacle it seems. Electronics are the harder end of it, and sometimes the sensible answer is a current motor and remote fitted to the existing curtain and rails. We will tell you which of those you are looking at before any work starts.
