Bushland and water surround Sandy Point on almost every side, with the Georges River along one boundary and the Holsworthy training area behind it. It is a quiet pocket, and the two things that cause us the most work here are debris off the trees and moisture off the river.
We cover Sandy Point in the 2172 postcode along with Pleasure Point and Voyager Point, and out to Moorebank, Wattle Grove and the Liverpool side of the Georges River.
Homes here sit among mature trees on generous blocks, a good number of them with large windows and decks facing the water and the bush. Large glass and heavy shutters under mature trees is a combination that needs more looking after than most.
Under mature trees a headbox fills up whether anybody is watching or not. Bark and leaf litter work in through the slot, pack around the barrel and eventually stop the curtain rolling evenly. Having the boxes and rails cleaned out once a year, ideally after the worst of the leaf drop is over, prevents most of the jams we get called to in this pocket. It is a small job compared with what a blocked barrel eventually does to a motor. If a shutter has started to sound different as it runs, the headbox is the first place to look.
