Most of the shutters we repair in Pendle Hill were retrofitted rather than fitted when the house went up. The suburb is largely post-war cottages and 1960s brick, with shutters added decades later, and how well that retrofit was done tends to decide what fails first.
We work across Pendle Hill and the 2145 postcode, from the streets around the station through to the Toongabbie and Wentworthville boundaries. Girraween, Greystanes, Pemulwuy and Westmead sit inside the same service area, so we are usually through here a couple of times a week.
Older brickwork and a much later shutter installation do not always agree with each other, and a lot of what we see here comes back to the fixings rather than the shutter itself.
When a shutter has been fitted to a house that is fifty or sixty years older than it is, the quality of that install decides everything that follows. We check how the brackets are anchored and whether the guides are actually parallel before we look at anything else, because a shutter that has been fighting a crooked opening for years will keep failing no matter how many new parts go into it. Getting the mounting right once is usually the difference between a repair that holds and one that comes back. A shutter that has been remounted properly rarely brings us back for the same reason.
