Working on a Newtown terrace is as much a logistics job as a mechanical one. Narrow frontages, no driveway, a shared wall on either side and often no rear access at all, which means everything comes in through the front door and up the hallway. It is worth telling us what we are walking into when you book.
We cover Newtown across the 2042 postcode, from the King Street spine out to the Enmore, Erskineville, Camperdown and Stanmore boundaries. Petersham, Marrickville and Darlington are all on the same run.
The housing is overwhelmingly Victorian terrace, much of it from the 1880s and 1890s, with later rear additions of every possible standard. Nothing about a shutter installation here is standard either.
A large part of Newtown falls within conservation areas, and anything that alters a street facing elevation attracts more scrutiny than it would elsewhere. We repair existing hardware wherever it can be saved, which keeps the frontage as it is and keeps the council question out of the conversation. Where a replacement is genuinely the only option, we will say so up front and set out what is involved rather than starting work and finding out halfway. Access through a neighbouring property is sometimes the easiest route for a rear opening, and that is a conversation worth having before the day rather than on it.
