Narrabundah holds some of the oldest surviving housing in Canberra outside the very centre, including a stock of small government-built homes from the 1940s and 1950s. Working on a shutter fitted to a house of that age is as much about the wall as it is about the shutter, and that is where most Narrabundah jobs really start.
We cover Narrabundah in the 2604 postcode, from the streets closer to Kingston and Griffith across to the Red Hill side and out towards the Symonston edge. The rest of the inner south is on the same route.
Much of Narrabundah's original housing was built quickly and to a budget, with soft mortar and modest brickwork. It has held up well over the decades, but it does not take a modern fixing the way a newer wall does.
Where a house has heritage or character value we would rather repair what is already there than replace it, and on most Narrabundah homes that is achievable. Curtains and roller tubes are often perfectly sound and it is only the fixings, guides and seals that need attention. If a rail has been anchored badly at some point in the past, re-anchoring it properly gives a better result than hanging a brand new shutter on the same unsound wall.
