Frost sits heavily in Kaleen. The suburb runs down towards Ginninderra Creek and the low ground holds cold air overnight, so shutters here spend several months of the year going from below zero at dawn to mild by mid-afternoon. That daily cycle is what does the damage, and it is why so much of what we replace in Kaleen has not actually worn out.
We cover Kaleen across the 2617 postcode, including North Kaleen and the streets closer to the Barton Highway edge. Giralang, Bruce, Lawson and the Lyneham side of the Belconnen boundary are all within the same run.
Kaleen was built out mainly through the 1970s, with brick veneer homes on generous blocks and a great deal of later renovation. Most shutters here were added after the fact, which means the fixings are working with whatever wall was already there.
Kaleen has a good deal of open reserve and playing field around it, and the wind picks up across that ground. Shutters on exposed elevations rattle in their rails, which loosens fixings faster and wears out the guide inserts. If a shutter has started making noise in the wind it has usually developed play somewhere, and that is worth having looked at before the play turns into a jam or a slat comes out of the track.
