The Inner West is not one repair job, it is around two dozen different ones. A Victorian terrace in Newtown, a Federation bungalow in Haberfield and a converted warehouse apartment in Rozelle have almost nothing in common from a shutter point of view except the age of the buildings around them.
We cover the Inner West council area and the suburbs people generally mean by the term, including Ashfield, Annandale, Balmain, Birchgrove, Croydon, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Haberfield, Leichhardt, Lewisham, Lilyfield, Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham, Rozelle, St Peters, Stanmore, Summer Hill, Sydenham and Tempe.
What ties the area together is old housing on tight blocks. Terraces, semis and workers cottages dominate, frontages are narrow, side access is often less than a metre, and a large share of the streets fall inside heritage conservation areas.
Access is the thing that catches people out on an Inner West job. A shutter that would be simple on a suburban block can be awkward on a terrace with no side passage and a shared party wall. It is worth telling us how the property is laid out when you book, because it decides what we bring. Where the frontage is heritage controlled, our default is to repair the existing hardware rather than replace the unit, which keeps the street elevation as it is.
