A lot of Gilmore's shutters are original to the house or close to it. The suburb went up in the early 1980s, plenty of the installations date from the same era, and forty odd years of Canberra winters is a long service life for a strap driven manual unit. Most of the calls we take here are about a mechanism that has simply reached its limit.
We cover Gilmore in the 2905 postcode along with Chisholm, Richardson, Macarthur and the wider Tuggeranong valley. We are in this area regularly and can generally group nearby jobs into the one trip.
The housing is early 1980s detached brick on gently sloping blocks, with a number of homes now extended or reroofed. Manual shutters are more common here than in the newer suburbs. Blocks here are a reasonable size and access to the windows is generally straightforward.
If a manual shutter is failing at the strap and everything else is sound, converting it to a motor is often less work than people assume, because the box and the curtain stay where they are. It is not always the right answer. On a small window that gets used twice a year, replacing the strap is the sensible fix. We will tell you which situation you are in rather than pushing the bigger job. Either way the curtain and the box normally stay exactly where they are.
