Winter starts earlier in the day here than people expect. A Garran shutter that no longer seals at the bottom rail is losing heat from around four in the afternoon through to mid morning, and across a Canberra winter that adds up to a lot of hours with a gap in the wall.
We cover Garran in the 2605 postcode along with Hughes, Red Hill, O'Malley and Phillip. The Canberra Hospital sits in Garran, so we are through this part of Woden often.
Garran dates from the 1960s. The stock is solid brick with aluminium and timber window frames, much of it renovated at least once, and shutters are retrofitted in almost every case. The older ones are approaching the end of their mechanical life. Blocks are generous and the gardens on them are now sixty years mature.
A fair number of Garran households include somebody who works shifts, and a shutter that no longer seals is the difference between a dark room and a light one. If yours is letting light in around the edges, the cause is almost always the guide brushes or the bottom seal rather than the curtain itself, and both can be replaced without touching the rest of the unit. If the light is coming in from the top of the box rather than the sides, that is a different fix, so it is worth telling us where you see it.
