The first residents moved into Curtin in the mid 1960s, well before anyone was thinking much about how a house holds its heat. The suburb marked fifty years since those arrivals in 2014. Those houses are still here and plenty of them are still working with the window openings they were built with. That is why so many Curtin shutters are doing double duty as insulation, and why a shutter that does not seat properly gets noticed here more than it would in a newer suburb.
We cover all of Curtin in the 2605 postcode, from the streets around the Curtin shops through to the Yarralumla, Deakin and Hughes boundaries. Lyons, Phillip and Weston are all nearby and we service the whole of Woden Valley.
Mid 1960s housing, parts of it laid out on the Radburn model, with shutters retrofitted long after the fact.
A closed shutter traps a layer of still air against the glass, and in a 1960s Curtin house that is worth having on a cold night. The benefit depends entirely on the seal though. If cold air gets around the guides or under the bottom rail, the shutter is doing a security job and not much of a thermal one. Resealing and realigning an existing unit is a smaller job than most people expect, and it is where we would start.
