Summer is the season that decides how a shutter in Claremont Meadows will hold up. The Penrith area regularly records the hottest afternoons in the Sydney basin, and a west facing aluminium shutter in the 2747 postcode can be far hotter to the touch than the air temperature suggests. Everything that fails here fails a little sooner because of it.

The suburb was built out from the early 1990s, so the housing is uniform: brick veneer with plenty of glass and, on many homes, shutters installed within a few years of handover. Those units are now in their second or third decade.
Plenty of households here rely on shutters to keep afternoon sun off the western side of the house before it ever reaches the glass.
