Barton is mostly offices, hotels and apartments, with a pocket of houses that predate almost everything else in Canberra. The Barton Housing Precinct was built between 1926 and 1927 to house public servants arriving for the opening of the first Parliament House, and it is heritage listed. Anything fitted to those homes, shutters included, has to be handled carefully. A few streets away the work is modern apartment and commercial glazing, which is a completely different job in the same postcode.
We cover all of Barton in the 2600 postcode, from the older streets near Telopea Park through the office precinct and across to the Kingston boundary. Forrest, Kingston and Parkes adjoin Barton directly and we work across all of them.
Two building types, two sets of problems. The 1920s houses have soft mortar and window openings that were never quite square. The apartments have modern facades that were not always detailed with a shutter in mind.
On a listed property the sensible approach is to repair what is already there. Saving the existing hardware avoids altering the appearance of a street-facing elevation and keeps you clear of the approval questions a visible replacement can raise. We will tell you plainly if a component is past saving, and if it is, we look for a like-for-like option before anything else.
