Balmain was built for shipyard and dock workers, and the housing still shows it. Narrow frontages, workers' cottages, tight terraces and sandstone that has been standing for well over a century. Fitting and repairing shutters on those buildings is careful work, and the harbour sitting around three sides of the peninsula adds a corrosion problem on top of it.
We cover the 2041 postcode across the peninsula, from the Victoria Road end along the Darling Street spine through to Balmain East. Birchgrove and Rozelle are part of the same run, and the waterfront streets on both the Iron Cove and harbour sides get the heaviest salt exposure of anywhere in the area.
Old masonry and salt air together produce a fairly predictable list, and most of it is repairable if it is caught before the corrosion gets structural.
Much of Balmain sits inside conservation areas, and a lot of the terraces have no side access at all. Both things shape how a repair gets done. We work with the hardware that is already there wherever it can be saved, which keeps street-facing elevations as they are, and we plan upper floor access before the day rather than working it out in the street. Parking is worth a mention too. If you have a spot we can use, tell us when you book.
